1. A briefcase and attache case are similar but not the same. An attache case is a traditional hard-sided square case. A briefcase can resemble an attache case, but briefcases are also often soft sided, expandable, and bag-like, i.e. briefbags.
2. A hard-sided briefcase has a strong, durable, and rigid frame that provides excellent security and safety. A soft sided briefcase is more lightweight and portable, and will expand to accommodate greater storage needs.
3. If you plan to buy a briefcase or attache case for carrying a laptop computer, check your laptop's dimensions first to make sure that it will fit inside. Even if you know your laptop's screen size, you might be able to estimate a proper sized carrying case (screen size is measured diagonally).
4. Briefcase interiors are just as important as exteriors. Look for briefcases with interior dividers/pockets that are tiered at the top and gusseted on the bottom/sides (a gusset is a material fold that will expand as a storage pocket becomes full).
5. Choose a briefcase or attache case material that will be durable and travel well. Full grain leather briefcases will age better than cheaper leather briefcases. Aluminum and ballistic nylon are modern briefcase materials designed for endurance and resiliency.
6. A modern briefcase doesn't have to be case-like. Expandable briefcases and briefbags offer enhanced carrying room for files and electronic devices. Their designs are more casual and well-suited to frequent business travelers.
